Treknology to Technology Challenge

Since 1966, Star Trek has offered us a vision of the future by taking us to the furthest regions of space and our own imaginations. By transporting us to strange new worlds and introducing us to new life and new civilizations, and as we boldly go…

None of it would be possible without the fictional technological wonders we have become so accustomed to seeing on screen. Some of which were the inspiration for real-world scientific developments, discoveries, and innovations.

Over the next six weeks, we will examine some of the technological advancements in medicine, communications, transportation, robotics, and more that could someday rival what we have come to recognize in Trekverse.

This challenge ended November 1st.

Week 1 - Sept 13

From the self-aware Exocomps, the conflicted journeys of B-4, Lore, and Data, or the quirky charm of the Mudd androids and the brute strength of Drednoks—robots and androids have shaped stories, challenged ethics, and inspired innovation across the decades. This week, we’ll look into the evolving landscape of robotics—exploring how imagination meets engineering, and how Trek’s mechanical minds mirror real-world scientific strides.

Week 2 - Sept 20

Phlox, Bones, Crusher, Bashir, and of course, The Doctor. These are just a few of the dedicated Starfleet personnel who took an oath “to do no harm” and preserve life. The weapons they wield are medical tricorders and hyposprays. This week, we will look at some of the technology used in the medical field today.

Week 3 - Sept 27

From weapons to warp cores, the Star Trek universe is practically saturated with plasma tech—Electro Plasma Systems (EPS), plasma rifles, cannons, torpedoes, torches, and even infusion units light up the arsenal. It seems like most everything runs on plasma in the Star Trek universe. But beyond sci-fi spectacle, what exactly is plasma? And how does this electrifying fourth state of matter power innovation in the real world? This week, we’ll dive into plasma’s fascinating origin story and the history of plasma.

From warp bubbles to mycelial highways, Star Trek’s starships boast a dazzling array of propulsion tech: warp drive, impulse drive, spore drive, and the elusive quantum slipstream. But what fuels our imagination might also echo the ambitions of cutting-edge research today. Let’s look at some of the advanced propulsion systems today.

Week 5 - Oct 11

Although Enterprise’s onboard computer calculates the path and trajectory of the ship, we are not quite there yet. Last week, we explored propulsion systems. This week, we will look at the motion of rockets and other forms of spacecraft by exploring orbital mechanics and the laws of motion.
