Welcome to Part 2 of the Oceanography Challenge

Taking a page from the beloved to some film, the Voyage Home, where the fate of the world rested on the fate of one species of mammal – the humpback whale, a film about, among other things, conservation and our connection to the oceans, we invite you to February’s Sciences Academy Challenge. We invite and challenge you to dive into the beautiful landscape of what lies deep beneath us and discover how the ocean relates to the climate and the success of our species.
In our collective efforts to protect the oceans, it’s easy to be drawn in by the magnificent creatures that inhabit the deep blue – whales breaching the surface, sea turtles gliding gracefully, dolphins playing in the waves. Our love for these marine animals is a powerful motivator for environmental action. But did you know that beyond the beauty and wonder of ocean wildlife, there lies a crucial link between ocean conservation and climate stability?
The oceans are not just a vast expanse of water; they are a vital component of the Earth’s climate system. The story of how our oceans influence climate is a fascinating one, intricately woven with the delicate balance of nature. As we delve deeper into understanding this connection, we realize that the work we do to protect our oceans is even more significant than we may have initially thought.
This challenge is six-weeks long and builds on the final challenge of December 2024. You may turn in certificates or screenshots of your transcript, either as you do the courses, or all at once during week 6, whichever is more convenient to you via sfsci-chiefedu@sfi.org.
Special thanks to the Sciences Institute as well as Monica Butt for helping to put together this wonderful challenge!
